Chaplaincy Classifications

Federally recognized endorsing agency for the Department of Defense, Veteran’s Administration, and the Bureau of Prisons.

Federal Requirements:

  • MDiv* required
  • 1-2 years of full-time ministry experience
  • CPE** as required by the agency
  • Must meet agency entry age requirements
  • Willing to work toward Board Certification
  • IMF Requirements:

    • The person holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • The person holds a Master of Divinity degree from an approved seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)
    • The person has reviewed and approved our doctrine, policies, and church history
    • The person has completed at least one unit (preferably three) of CPE, or willing to obtain within the first two years of membership
    • The person has been credentialed for professional ministry to include preaching, administering sacraments/ordinances, and church administration
    • The person has successfully completed the general membership and professional clergy requirements of IMF

    Giving Contributions:  Monthly giving is expected, and 5% of a chaplain's income is the norm.

    Health Care, Correctional Workplace, Police, Fire, & EMS, Other Organizations Requiring Professional credentials

    In-Training Requirements:

  • MDiv* required
  • BS required
  • 1 year of ministry experience
  • 1 unit of CPE** is preferred. (many organizations require 1-4 units)
  • Willing to work toward Board Certification
  • IMF Requirements:

    • The person holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • The person holds a Master of Divinity degree from an approved seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)
    • The person has reviewed and approved our doctrine, policies, and church history
    • The person has completed a minimum of three units of CPE, or willing to obtain within the first two years of membership
    • The person has been credentialed for professional ministry to include preaching, administering the Sacraments/Ordinances and church administration
    • The person has successfully completed the general membership and clergy requirements of IMF

    Giving Contributions:  Monthly giving is expected, and 5% of a chaplain's income is the norm.

    Military Chaplain Candidates, Civilian Seminarians, and Others Working Toward Chaplain Credentials

    In-Training Requirements:

    • Enrollment or Completion of BS* Required
    • Accepted/Enrolled in an ATS-accredited MDiv* program (Military Chaplain Candidates only)

    Giving Contributions:  Monthly giving is expected, and 5% of a chaplain's income is the norm.

    Volunteer, Volunteer Police, Fire, & EMS, Rodeo, Race Track, Pre-seminary College Students, and Other Unique Ministry Settings

    Community Requirements:

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
    • Willingness to acquire at least one unit of CPE**

    Giving Contributions:  Monthly giving is expected, and 5% of a chaplain's income is the norm.

    *All degrees must be from an Association of Theological Schools (ATS) accredited institution.
    **All Clinical Pastoral Education must be from an accredited program recognized by the Department of Education (APCE or ICPT)
